Abstract

In many infections multiple microbial species are present simultaneously. Such polymicrobial infections can be viewed as small microbial ecosystems. We focus on polymicrobial urinary tract infections and demonstrate that there are ample ecological interactions between different bacterial species, both in the presence and absence of antibiotics, which affect the stability of this ecosystem. Do these bacterial interactions also affect the ability of bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics? We show by experimental evolution that bacterial interactions affect both the rate and the level of antibiotics that can be attained. These results may have consequences for the treatment and eradication of polymicrobial infections.
