The Centre for Wetland Ecology is a partnership of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), Radboud University Nijmegen (RU), Utrecht University (UU) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
Founded in 2000, the centre has become the national platform for research in wetland habitats, and a knowledge centre par excellence for authorities, NGOs, and industry. Its mission is twofold: (i) increase fundamental knowledge of the functioning of wetlands and lakes, and (ii) application of this knowledge to bring solutions to the many problems that wetland ecosystems are faced with today.

To solve water-related problems calls for quite specific knowledge. The Centre for Wetland Ecology has this knowledge. Whether in the fields of aquaculture, wetland restoration, water treatment, river management, soil hydrology, or in re-establishing natural conditions, the centre can help. As such it is the knowledge centre par excellence for both the authorities and industry.

The Centre for Wetland Ecology operates on a national and an international level. Not only will you find among its clients the (Dutch) Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, and the Rotterdam Water Treatment, while at the same time the centre is carrying out research in England, Norway, Sweden, Germany, US, the Philippines, and Mexico.

The scientists of the Centre for Wetland Ecology are experts in their branches of research. In addition they are used to working together with scientists from other disciplines. They have to, as water problems rarely limit themselves to one discipline. What makes the Centre for Wetland Ecology so different from other 'water centres' is that it stands for an integral approach and has the necessary wide-ranging expertise to do so.
