Symposium on Tropical Ecology a big success
This year IBED's Prof. dr. Antoine Cleef reaches legal retirement age. To honour this milestone and acknowledge his years of work for the Universiteit van Amsterdam, on 26 January 2007 a symposium was organized dedicated to research and education in Tropical Ecology. The symposium was very well visited and highly appreciated by Antoine.
"A great day that gave me many fond memories". These are the words Antoine Cleef used when looking back at the symposium titled "Tropical Ecology: what does experience teach us?" held on 26 January 2007.
In the morning, three alumni of Antoine Cleef presented their ideas about the direction Tropical Ecology education should take in the coming decade, based on the practical experience from their current jobs as well as the Tropical Ecology education they themselves received in the past. In the afternoon, several speakers highlighted various aspects of the vegetation in Tropical high mountains in a more personal atmosphere, giving special attention to the páramo research by Antoine Cleef.
Over 120 participants of various backgrounds and affiliations attended the symposium and actively took part in discussing the many facets of research and education in Tropical Ecology. Many used the day to refresh memories, exchange experiences and make plans for the future. It was a very succesful day therefore that undoubtedly will lead to more Tropical Ecological co-operation within The Netherlands.
