The master programmes Earth Sciences and Biological Sciences of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) both received a high ranking in the ‘Keuzegids Masters 2011’ that was published on 8 February 2011. The rankings of this independent, annual publication are based on a combined assessment by students and experts of all master programmes in The Netherlands.

Earth Sciences

The UvA master Earth Sciences was assessed in the category “Earth Sciences, Water Management and Climate”. It was ranked third out of nine masters considered in this category. In addition, it was ranked first out of the three general Earth Sciences masters considered, and was the only one of those three to receive an overall score of ‘excellent’.

The big difference in ranking with the other two general Earth Sciences masters, which ended on the eight and ninth place, was caused by a significantly higher score in almost all categories of the student assessment of the UvA master. The students were particularly pleased with the contents of the programme and the contact with the teachers.

Biological Sciences

The UvA master Biological Sciences was assessed in the category ‘General Biology Masters’. Here it was ranked third out of six masters considered and received an overall score of ‘very good’. Since the ranking by the experts was exactly the same for all masters considered in the General Biology category, the difference was once again made by the assessment by the students.
