Dr. Marc Davidson of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) and the Research Group Ethics of the Faculty of Humanities, received a VIDI grant from NWO for an interdisciplinary investigation of economic instruments for the protection of global biodiversity.

Biodiversity and ecosystem services

Although biodiversity and ecosystem services benefit all mankind, these benefits presently hardly play any role in economic decision making. In economic jargon: the main benefits of biodiversity and ecosystem services are external. Since the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem services comes at a price, economic decisions - for instance concerning land conversion - too often are at the expense of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Therefore, there has been an urgent international call to develop economic instruments which internalize the benefits in economic decision making. The objective of the research is to develop such instruments.

A PhD student ecology will look for indicator(s) that balance practical applicability and ecological effectiveness. A PhD student economics will develop global economic instruments and analyze their effects. Marc Davidson will coordinate the project and analyze moral principles for the international distribution of responsibilities (burden sharing).

VIDI grants

VIDI grants are part of the Innovational Research Incentives Schemes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and are targeted at excellent researchers who want to develop their own innovative line of research and appoint one or more researchers. Applicants must have completed their doctorates and should already spent some years conducting post-doctoral research. The maximum amount of the grant is € 800,000 for a period of five years.

Davidson's grant was awarded by a special interdisciplinary VIDI committee that judges proposals that transgress the boundaries of the disciplinary committees of NWO.
