Volendam uses more drugs than London, Paris or Milan

8 November 2012

On request of the television program Spuiten en Slikken, IBED researcher Pim de Voogt studied the use of cocaine and XTC in the Volendam, Edam, Monnickendam region. In the 11 November 2012 episode of the show, he explained the remarkable results that show that the use is higher than in big cities like London, Paris or Milan.

Spuiten en Slikken

Spuiten en Slikken is a popular Dutch television show aimed at people in their late teens or early twenties that focusses on sex and drugs. On request of the show, Pim de Voogt studied  traces of illicit substances in sewage of the region of Volendam, Edam, Monnickendam. The study was performed in a fashion similar to a larger study of illicit substance use in European cities that was published earlier this year.

His remarkable conclusion: the per capita use of cocaine and XTC in the Volendam, Edam, Monnickendam region ranks fourth in Europe and is larger than that in big cities like London, Paris and Milan.

The show was broadcast on television channel Nederland 3 on Sunday 11 November 2012.
