Pim de Voogt in special edition of American Chemical Society

Research of UvA professor Pim de Voogt and colleagues of the KWR Watercycle Research Institute, the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Waterworks and Wageningen University & Research, is published in a special edition of the American Chemical Society. The paper describes the quest for the identity of some hitherto unknown compounds that have been showing up regularly over the past decade in samples taken from the river Meuse.

Using accurate mass high resolution mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed the identity of some industrial compounds used in the manufacturing of resins. Five out of the seven compounds identified are not contained in the CAS registry, a compound database containing more than 71 million organic and inorganic substances. Whether or not the substances identified pose any harm for man or the environment remains to be clarified. Their structures suggest that removal of these compounds from the water during drinking water treatment will be difficult. Next to this paper a second paper is selected about the analysis of fullerenes (organic nano particles) in water. Both articles have been published in the thematic vritual issue about Anaytical Chemistry.

Pim de Voogt is chair of the department of Aquatic Environmental Ecology of IBED. He has been employed by UvA since 1992 and was appointed as endowed professor in 2007. He became full professor of Chemical Biological Interactions in Aquatic Ecosystems in 2014. His research focuses on the fate and effects of natural and xenobiotic substances in the environment . Next to his professorship at UvA he holds a position as principal scientist at KWR, the research institute of the Dutch water companies.
