The annual open day of Amsterdam Science park was held Saturday 7th of October. Numerous nice demonstrations and activities were organized, of which one was the Mite lab of the Evolutionary and Population Biology group. The stand “Fantastic Mites and how to control them” was a great success and attracted many visitors of all ages!
We wanted to show our visitors which difficulties growers need to overcome before vegetables end up on their plates. Spider mites infest many vegetable plants but growers can use predatory mites – the natural enemies of spider mites - to get rid of them in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner. Visitors could observe the big difference between healthy and mite-infested crop plants. From our big screen in the hall everyone could see what was happening in the micro cosmos of our infested plants. Moreover, visitors could look through the microscopes to witness spider mites and predatory mites in action. We, as part of the EPB group, enjoyed sharing our work on these small but dangerous organisms with the public very much and we are looking forward to the next occasion to do it!
