Midterm external evaluation of IBED research in 2009
In 2009 the external Scientific Advisory Committee of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics carried out a Midterm evaluation of the Institute as stipulated by the Standard Evaluation Procedure (SEP) of Academic Research Institutes in The Netherlands (VSNU).
The Committee consisted of:
- Prof. dr. Pieter Baas of Nationaal Herbarium Nederland (Chair)
- Prof. dr. Godfrey M. Hewitt of the University of East Anglia
- Prof. dr. Joachim Hill of the University of Trier
- Prof. dr. Michel Loreau of McGill University Montreal
The Committee carried out the review with the help of documentation contained in a Self-Evaluation Report prepared by IBED; the Annual Reports 2006, 2007 and 2008 and the report of the last full research assessment carried out in 2006 (see below). Based on this the Committee prepared an evaluation report that was discussed with the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. dr. Bart Noordam, and the Director of IBED, Prof. dr. Peter van Tienderen during a videoconference on 29 January 2010.
The Committee was unanimously impressed by the quality of the Midterm Self-Evaluation and IBED's efforts to explain clearly how previous recommendations have been implemented , which new developments have meanwhile occurred and which are envisaged. The Committee also strongly agreed with the overall SWOT analysis as well as the guiding principles and actions for the future, although the latter could be linked even more firmly to the SWOT analysis.
The midterm evaluation report containing the full findings of the Committee can be downloaded here. In addition, the midterm self evaluation report is provided.
Per 1 January 2011 the term of the old Scientific Advisory Committtee ended and a new committee was installed. Please follow the link below for more details.
Full external evaluation of IBED research in 2006
In 2006 the research of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) was assessed according to the Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP) of the Association of Universities of The Netherlands (VSNU). The assessment was carried out by an external Evaluation Committee consisiting of:
- Prof. dr. Wiel P.M. Hoekstra of University Utrecht and the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences (Chair),
- Prof. dr. J. Wolfgang Wägele of the Rheinischen Friederich-Wilhemls Universität Bonn,
- Prof. dr. James W. Kirchner of the University of California at Berkely,
- Prof. dr. Nelson G. Hairston of Cornell University,
- Drs. Klaas Deen (Secretary)
The Committee based its advice on a Self-Evaluation Report prepared by IBED; a bibliometric analysis of the output of the Institute in the period 2000-2006; and last but not least, extensive discussion with IBED scientists and management during a three-day site visit in November 2006.
The Evaluation Committee was positively impressed by IBED's research, and rated the quality, productivity, relevance and prospects of the Institute as a whole as very good to Excellent. The individual Research Themes received very good to excellent marks on these four aspects as well. The Committee concluded amongst others that:
"The research program of IBED as a whole is functionally coherent, and the three research programs together offer many possibilities for co-operation. A strong point of IBED is the sound mixture of experimental work, theoretical work and strong conceptual thinking".
The evaluation report containing the full findings of the Committee and the bibliometric analysis of the output of the Institute can be downloaded here. In addition, the self evaluation report is provided.
