Intrigued by earth surface

‘The Bachelor’s programme Earth Sciences was the perfect choice for me. Earth surface processes and subjects as geology, geomorphology, soil and ecology always intrigued me. I like the way landscape is formed and why certain processes occur, subjects which all discussed at the programme. The group sizes are perfect and you will meet teachers and students across different years. Personally, I found the perfect mix between research and management at the Master’s Earth Sciences at the UvA.’

Knowledge into practice

‘In the Master’s programme we studied the theory of geo-informatics and modelling. During field research, we put this knowledge into practice. We did several fieldwork projects in the Netherlands and in other countries. Here, we worked together with students or local residents. We learned how to extract information, prepare data and process the results and ways you can combine these things with the study material. This all came together in my thesis of the geomorphology of Vorarlberg, which was nice and interesting to do.’

‘In the management courses it was educational to learn how policy makers deal with the (for example) consequences of climate change or water management around the world. I also did an internship which was very helpful for me to find out what job possibilities there were after graduating. My internships at the research department of the KNMI and a waterboard (semi government organisation) were very useful experiences for the job market.’

From study to work

‘At the moment, I am working for more than five years at the GEO-IT company Geodan. I started in the ‘Recourses Team’ where I worked at a client as a GIS (Geographic Information System) specialist for a longer period. Currently I am working in a Data Analysis team where we create data solutions for spatial questions, give GIS-advice at clients and work in different projects with other teams. It is nice to work with people in a variety of projects. Besides projects related to social geography, I am now working in a project with models of the subsurface (geography and lithology) that relate to the physical geography of the study I also apply my GIS knowledge from the Master’s in my daily work as a GIS specialist and data analyst. Besides working with spatial data, I also appreciate the variety of activities. After I studied Earth Sciences, I never looked the same at the landscape (and its processes) anymore – consciously and subconsciously I always keep in mind the things I have learned. It makes holidays much more interesting and reminds me of the good time at the UvA!’
