Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics

We aim to unravel how ecosystems function in all their complexity

Research themes

Ecosystems and Landscape dynamics
The Ecology and Landscape Dynamics research department improves our understanding of the functioning and dynamics of abiotic and biotic components of (geo-)ecosystems across landscapes through time.
Evolutionary and Population Biology
Research in the department of Evolutionary and Population Biology focuses on understanding the ecological and evolutionary processes that drive community dynamics and speciation, and determine biodiversity patterns.
Freshwater and Marine Ecology
The department of Freshwater & Marine Ecology aims to increase our understanding of the biodiversity and dynamics of freshwater and marine ecosystems from the level of molecules and genes to entire ecosystems.
Theoretical and Computational Ecology
Research in the Department of Theoretical and Computation Ecology focuses on understanding the complexity of ecological systems by using theoretical and advanced computational approaches.

Research shows importance flower strips for agriculture

What role play flower-rich field margins in agriculture? And do these flower strips enhance biodiversity? These were some of the central questions of a two-year collaborative research programme that involved farmers, agronomists, conservationists and IBED researcher Paul van Rijn. The research will be continued thanks to a two year European subsidy to study and implement Functional AgroBiodiversity in Northwest Europe.

Hal Caswell wins Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship

Ecologist Hal Caswell of the University of Amsterdam has been awarded the Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship 2019/20 for his research on mathematical models of population dynamics. 'The models we currently use only take very basic aspects of health into account. But in order to cope with challenges such as aging and climate change, we need more sophisticated models.'
