From an early age, professor Anja Spang wondered where humans come from and what their deepest roots are. It inspired her to start researching evolutionary microbiology. In her inaugural lecture she discusses the history of life on our planet, with special attention to the tree of life and the evolution of cellular diversity from bacteria and archaea to the origin of eukaryotic cells.
