In a new project – titled TOSS- integrated tools will be developed to select and produce Safe by Design alternatives for problematic Persistent, Mobile and Toxic chemicals (PMTs). PMTs pose a risk to the watercycle and human and ecological health because they are difficult to remove by environmental technologies, are relatively hard to detect, can spread widely, and are currently poorly incorporated into regulation.
TOSS aims to generate experience with putting the Safe and Sustainable by Design approach in practice and have a lasting impact on how we view and approach design, production and regulation of chemicals and their applications.
The TOSS project will be executed as part of a consortium to draw expertise from several academic, governmental and industry stakeholders. The consortium partners include Wageningen University & Research, Delft University of Technology, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), Rathenau institute, Vereniging van Waterbedrijven in Nederland (Vewin), Koninklijke Vereniging van de Nederlandse Chemische Industrie (VNCI) and Croda International.
Prof. dr. Annemarie van Wezel successfully secured funding for the TOSS project from the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA). The thematic programme of the NWA is aimed at the development and implementation of a practical Safe by Design approach for the design of chemical substances, materials, products and processes. This grant will allow three PhD students to be appointed to work on the project.
