  • Introduction

    Please let me introduce myself

    My name is Thijs de Boer and I'm the Manager of the IBED GIS-Studio.

    After my studies in Physical Geograpy in Utrecht (the Netherlands) I was a Phd-student at the Humboldt University in Berlin (Germany). Back in the Netherlands I taught in Highschools as a geography teacher. After a few yers in this profession, I had several jobs in the ICT sector.

    A logical follow-up was my work as a GIS specialist and later on as a Programm Manager at  DLG (Government Service for Land and Water Management).

    My job as Manager of the GIS-studio is very broad and has many aspects: GIS, Remote Sensing, ICT, system- and network administration, research in (physical) geography, ecology and earth sciences and of course teaching and education.

    Dr. W. M. (Thijs) de Boer - Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics at the Faculty of Science, University of Amsterdam.

    Thijs de Boer studied Physical Geography and Education at the University of Utrecht. After graduating in 1988 he worked as a PhD student at the Humboldt University in Berlin and received his doctorate there in 1992 with a thesis entitled 'Äolische Prozesse und Lanschaftsformen im mittleren Baruther Urstromtal seit dem Hochglazial of Weichselkaltzeit'.

    From 1993 on de Boer worked for several years as a first-grade teacher in geography and automation in secondary education. From 1996 - 2000 he worked as a system administrator and project manager in the IT. At that time he also wrote as a freelancer for the school method 'Atlantis' of ThiemeMeulenhoff for upper HAVO / VWO in the subject geography.

    From the year 2000 on, by his knowledge of IT and Geographic Information Systems, he worked as a GIS specialist in the Ministry of Agriculture \ DLG (later Ministry of Economic Affairs). Until the end of 2011 he was there working as Program Manager at the GIS Competence Centre in Utrecht.

    Thijs de Boer is now the manager of the GIS Studio IBED / Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam. He manages the GIS facilities, provides GIS lab work, supports students and colleagues in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing, supports research and develops teaching methods. Additionally, he started the UvA Geoportal: http://geodata.science.uva.nl:8080/geoportal/catalog/main/home.page This Geoportal can be used to archive, search and download geodata from many different fieldwork areas that IBED researchers are working in.
