Microbial ecology is the study of microbial roles in the environment and the environmental properties that influence microbial diversity and function. Within ELD, we focus on soil microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, fungi, viruses, and eukaryotic microfauna) and their roles on the carbon and nitrogen cycles.
Researchers Paula Dalcin Martins, Nadine Präg and Laura Koopmans collect gas samples for analyses of microbially produced greenhouse gas emissions from soils in 2025.

We are particularly interested in applied aspects of microbial ecology such as soil fertility and carbon sequenstration, climate change mitigation, and nature management and restoration.
